Just released
nearly 24 hours ago at the stroke of midnight on the 27th, here is a
monumental looking back, and, in doing so, a current State Of The Union that still
holds sway from Mr. Dylan himself.
Perhaps besides
the pointed lyric and graveyard, martial shuffle, the most interesting point is
what Dylan had to say: “Greetings to my
fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the
years. This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find
interesting. Stay safe, stay observant and may God be with you.”
Stay observant
indeed. Perhaps never before in living memory has it been more vitally important
to stay observant – and there are rewards, hidden universes to be discovered, for
doing just that.

We've all been here before, we'll all be here again. All of this will be like but a dream recalled in the morning in some time yet to be.
From 'Changing Of The Guards' off Street Legal in 1978. Dylan at the time said this song was a thousand years old.
Dylan: "I don't know where these songs come from. Sometimes I'm thinking to some other age that I've lived through. I must have had the experience of all these songs because sometimes I don't know what I'm writing about until years later it becomes clearer to me."
Here what had begun as a conversation between 2 lovers the morning after their tryst at the dawn of battle has changed into a prophetic pronouncement of the End Times. Who do you want to spend the end of the world with? Are those things decided for us before we're born? Can we change them? Should we?
Are these those beginnings? Are the End Times starting? I don't know & I don't know if that is for any of us to know. But I DO know that with Murder Most Foul, and with songs like this one from 1978, Dylan has been peering into our tea leaves and reading our crystal visions for quite some time now.

Seriously, many have mentioned this. Obviously if it is a nod to Tolkien's darker imaginings, in this context, that's not so good.
OTOH, if it's the Eye of Ra or Horus then it's considered protection, & that's better.
Of course you can dance with the Egyptian mystery schools & have that be either a very good (Jesus) or a very bad (Nazis) thing.

Which is why I seem to almost always gravitate to his "born again" period that started in '79. Looking at the big picture, & quotes like his to Bradley, in hindsight it seems almost like he was trying to counteract something either that he agreed to or that had been done to him. One totally honest moment (or a plea) in a lifetime of subterfuge, misdirection and masquerade?
You could look at it like that. As time goes by & the clock grows incessant, it, more & more, sure seems that way. While you're here and want a shortcut to getting there, this is for sure the Devil's world. The Prince of the Power of the Air, which might be anything from all media to 5G. Spooky.
But many are clued in to the dawning realization that in the end, GOD WINS. Maybe Dylan came to that realization to his horror earlier than most, & decided to enact a counter spell. If your heart is sincere, there's nothing God can't get you out of.
