ZODIAC

 

Here on the cusp of another Rites of Spring and as a tide-me-over til the next installment, I thought it might be a good, auspicious time to announce that Netflix has now been usurped by Youtube, and the evidence is giving a critical reappraisal to the vibey mood masterpiece that is David Fincher's 2007 ZODIAC.

I worked in the downtown financial district of Richmond, VA starting in 1979, and I can fully vouch for the fact that Fincher -- somehow -- absolutely nailed that period's feel and aesthetic down to the paint on the walls and what the mail looked like. He effectively transported that late 1960s/70s decade so comprehensively it ramps up the disturbing to whole new levels of existential dread.

The smells were different; second-hand smoke, anybody??

This film was a ridiculously authentic shot of genius unlikely to be made today.

I'll include here the comprehensive audio and some written word of investigative reporter Harry Martin's series out of the Napa Sentinel which ties together more than a lot; including but not limited to a shadowy network of law enforcement and political complicity; 

the altogether eerie fact that the first victim shown in the film on July 4, Darlene Ferrin, KNEW ALL OF THE OTHER VICTIMS, lived with some of them at the same boarding house; 

and most importantly was likely part of an occult group or coven in the Bay Area.
